I will be a 1L this coming fall and currently interested in being a prosecutor.
I am an African American female and will be attending St. Mary’s Law School, and everyone tells me not to pursue that career path because it is not worth it.
Do you have an opinion on the issue of being a Prosecutor. (Or working in the DA’s office, since I would obviously not be a DA anytime soon.)
Thanks!

I’ve put together some of my thoughts on the subject, and invited my readers to add their thoughts:

Good luck!

The starting pay for prosecutors in Tarrant County is wrong on this blog. Unfortunately, the Tarrant County website is not updated. The starting pay for a misdemeanor prosecutor is $59,348. The link above takes you to an employment description of a FELONY position. Felony prosecutors make anywhere from $65K to $110K depending on their level of experience.
My thoughts on being a prosecutor: I love it. If you want a job making a lot of money as soon as you come out of law school, this is not the job for you. On the other hand, if you don’t mind working your way up the ladder, being a team player, being in trial and helping people who truly can’t help themselves, then you should consider it. You have to have the right mindset to be a prosecutor: and it isn’t to have a title behind your name.
Dawn,
Can you share your thoughts on getting a job as a prosecutor? DFW area.
Thanks.
I know for me, I’ve always wanted to be a prosecutor. Alot of people really don’t understand what it means to be a prosecutor. As someone mentioned early on; if you’re interested in making the big salary after you finish law school; then please don’t go into this area of law. In order for one to be a good prosecutor, you have to have the right mind set. After completing my externship with a prosecutor’s office in Atlanta, I knew that I was goiing into the right career.
If I’m making a different in society or the community, then I’m happening. I want to become a Circuit Court Judge in the State of South Carolina, then later become a Senate, and possibly even Governor. Having been a career prosecutor, I feel this would be very beneficial in the future. If you love seening justice service this is the right career.
I can’t want until next year. I’m ready to get back in court; this time as a full-time Assistant District Attorney. The only downside for me would be not getting the opportunity to prosecute major felony and misdemeanor case right off. *BONUS: if they’re paying your student loans off; do it.
